SUMMARY:April CIDMATH/EAVE Seminar
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join the April CIDMATH/EAVE Seminar Wednesday\, April 1\, 12 – 1 pm in CNR 1000. \nThis event will feature a presentation by Dr. Amy K. Winter\, Assistant Professor at the UGA College of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. \nTitle: Country-Level Predictability of Measles Outbreaks Worldwide \nThe introduction of safe highly effective measles-containing vaccines has led to large reductions in measles cases and deaths while also increasing the interannual variability in measles incidence. Fortunately\, complex dynamical transitions of measles transmission may often have simple underlying exogenous explanations such as changing birth rates and vaccination rates. In this Gates Foundation–funded project\, we sought to develop a global\, data-driven measles outbreak prediction framework using supervised classification methods. We combined demographic\, vaccination\, and historical surveillance data to build and evaluate machine learning models\, benchmarking against a baseline approach across diverse transmission settings. While our machine learning models did not consistently outperform the baseline\, the systematic comparison of methods provided important insights. In this talk\, I will describe the model development and evaluation process\, present key comparative results\, and discuss what these findings imply for measles control programs. More broadly\, I hope to highlight lessons about the practical opportunities and limitations of applying machine learning to global infectious disease outbreak prediction. \nClick here to RSVP and add the event to your calendar. \nClick here to register to join on Zoom.

SUMMARY:CIDMATH/EAVE Seminar
DESCRIPTION:  \nPlease join us for a CIDMATH/EAVE seminar\, Wednesday\, February 11\, 12-1pm in CNR 1000. \nDr. Seema Lakdawala\, Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory School of Medicine will present “Experimental Studies on the Pandemic Risk of H5N1”. \nAbstract: Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) was introduced into U.S. dairy cattle in March 2024 and has since spread to 19 states\, more than 1\,000 herds\, and caused 71 reported human infections. To inform pandemic risk assessment\, we conducted an intensive surveillance study across 14 California dairy farms and detected infectious virus in both aerosols and wastewater streams\, highlighting exposure pathways that could facilitate zoonotic spillover. Using the ferret model\, we further show that pre-existing immunity to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic virus mitigates severe disease following bovine H5N1 infection\, suggesting that population immunity may partially constrain clinical severity even as spillover opportunities expand. \nClick here to register to join on Zoom.
